Tensions between Uganda’s military leadership and opposition figures have escalated after Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba publicly declared that he wants a new Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, directly targeting Nakawa West MP Joel Ssenyonyi.

In a series of posts shared on social media, Gen Muhoozi said he was actively working to see Ssenyonyi removed from the position and indicated that he would personally endorse a replacement of his choice.

His remarks quickly triggered debate across Uganda’s political space, reigniting concerns over the increasing role of military figures in civilian political discourse.

The Chief of Defence Forces stated that he had instructed members of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) to study mechanisms through which Ssenyonyi could be removed from his parliamentary leadership role. He further suggested that the new Leader of the Opposition would have his direct backing, a statement that immediately drew mixed reactions from political observers and lawmakers.

Kasambya County MP David Kabanda responded shortly after the remarks, signaling alignment with the directive. In a brief reply, Kabanda indicated readiness to implement the instructions, further intensifying debate about the influence of political movements aligned with military leadership.

Gen Muhoozi later thanked Kabanda for the response, reinforcing perceptions of coordination between senior military leadership and allied political actors. He also escalated his criticism of Ssenyonyi, referring to earlier statements in which he accused the opposition MP of disrespectful comparisons involving military history and leadership.

The latest developments come amid a broader pattern of online exchanges between Gen Muhoozi and opposition leaders. His social media activity has repeatedly drawn attention for its direct tone and political nature, often blurring the line between military authority and partisan politics.

Under Uganda’s parliamentary framework, the Leader of the Opposition is selected by the largest opposition party in Parliament. Ssenyonyi currently holds the position following his appointment by the National Unity Platform after internal leadership changes in 2024.

At the time of publication, Ssenyonyi had not issued an official response to the latest comments.

The political climate has been further heightened by ongoing legal and security developments involving opposition figures, including the recent arrest and prosecution of former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, which has already sparked strong reactions from political and legal circles.

Analysts note that the renewed confrontation highlights growing friction between Uganda’s opposition leadership and powerful state actors, raising questions about the independence of parliamentary institutions and the future of political competition in the country.
