Residents of Buhoma Town Council in Kanungu District took to the streets in protest, expressing growing frustration over what they describe as decades of unfulfilled government promises to construct key roads considered vital to the region's economic development.

The demonstrations, which temporarily disrupted movement in parts of the district, centered on demands for the long-awaited upgrading of the Hamurwa–Kerere–Kanungu road and the Kanyantorogo–Butogota–Ruhija road. Community members say the projects have been repeatedly promised by government leaders but remain unimplemented despite numerous assurances over the years.

The roads are regarded as crucial transport links for tourism, trade, and local business activity in southwestern Uganda. Residents argue that their poor condition continues to hinder economic growth and limit opportunities in one of the country's most important tourism regions.

Many protesters pointed to promises dating back more than 20 years, saying successive announcements have created expectations that have never been matched by visible construction work. While government officials have repeatedly highlighted plans to improve the routes, residents say the reality on the ground remains unchanged.

Business operators and transporters have been among the most vocal critics of the delays. According to local traders, the deteriorating road network increases transportation costs, damages vehicles, and makes it difficult to move goods efficiently. Tourism stakeholders have also warned that poor road access affects visitors traveling to major attractions within the region.

Hotel owners and tour operators argue that smoother transport infrastructure would significantly improve visitor experiences and boost local incomes. The area serves as a gateway to internationally recognized wildlife destinations and attracts thousands of tourists annually.

District leaders have joined residents in calling for urgent intervention. Local officials say repeated delays have eroded public confidence and left communities questioning whether the projects remain a government priority.

Several leaders noted that recent announcements and symbolic initiatives linked to the roads raised hopes among residents, only for those expectations to fade as construction failed to materialize. They insist that visible progress is now needed rather than additional commitments.

Government agencies have previously cited budgetary constraints and limited fiscal space as major obstacles to launching new infrastructure projects. Concerns over rising public debt and financing arrangements have reportedly slowed approval processes for several planned developments across the country.

Despite these explanations, protesters insist that the roads are essential investments that should not be postponed further. During the demonstrations, residents carried placards and chanted slogans demanding that government fulfill its commitments and prioritize infrastructure development in the district.

Security personnel monitored the protests but largely allowed demonstrators to express their grievances peacefully.
